Buyers Guide to Local Timber
Local timber from local suppliers near to you
With today's environmental sensitivities, it is now becoming much easier and eco-friendly to buy both locally grown softwoods and hardwoods locally in the UK and Ireland for construction or fuel. Sourcing locally has a positive effect on the local economy as well as the environment with a reduction of carbon emissions for transport and the use of a sustainable resource.
Local timber can be put to use for a wide variety of purposes such as flooring, furniture, joinery, landscaping, cladding and housing construction.
Choosing the right timber for the right job is essential for effective performance. Buying local timber from a local supplier means you can see your timber at an early stage, discuss your exact needs with an expert and even visit the woodland or forest it has come from.
Certification schemes such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) show the timber is sustainably managed but not if it is sourced locally. When buying local timber, the source of the timber can be tracked through the chain of custody to validate it has been locally sourced and sustainably managed. Just ask where their timber comes from.
Using local timber is good for:
- wildlife
- local jobs
- regional wealth
- woodland recreation.
Timber for Construction
Wood is a wholly sustainable resource, the only naturally renewable and recyclable building material and fuel.
Timber uses less embodied energy in it's production than any other building material.
Local timber is a beautiful, durable material to use on any scale project. It is a great insulator used as flooring or for framing and cladding.
The use of local timber sources supports woodland management adding value to British woodlands. It encourages local producers and minimises the 'timber miles', keeping the carbon footprint of your project down whilst ensuring the future of local woodland industries.

Timber for Fuel
Find the best seasoned hardwood logs available locally. Hardwood logs are available in bulk bags comprising of oak, ash, beech, birch and sycamore logs, which are the best logs for burning in an open fire or log burning stove.
Hardwood logs burn at a slower and steadier rate giving off a much higher and longer lasting heat from your fire, therefore you will not need to burn as many hardwood logs to heat your home as you would if you were burning softwood logs. Also hardwood logs do not spit like softwood logs and are therefore also safer to burn.
Hardwood timber comes from oak, ash, beach, sycamore, apple amongst others. Hardwoods are slower growing and therefore more dense than softwoods.
Softwood mainly come from coniferous trees such as pine, spruce, laylandi which grow much faster and are therefore less dense than hardwoods.
